The Snow Dragon Flies Home

Somtow’s recent opera Bhuridat, about the incarnation of the Buddha in the form of a dragon prince, has just completed a much acclaimed run at the Thailand Cultural Center, but that isn’t the only operatic premiere about dragons that the prolific composer (born in the year of the dragon) has for Bangkok in 2015. His contemporary fantasy opera, The Snow Dragon, recently had its world premiere at the Skylight Theatre in Milwaukee, USA. It has had a flood of favorable reviews and played eleven performances, most of them ending with standing ovations. Seven opera companies are presently considering their own productions of The Snow Dragon, but meanwhile the original show, with the original cast, will fly in to Bangkok July 15 and 16 for two performances.
